A core goal of the Foundation for New York’s Strongest is to establish an educational museum dedicated to DSNY’s rich history, present operations, and vibrant future. We have begun with a “museum without walls” approach to engage with the public, conduct market research, and explore potential locations. In the past year, you may have seen us at pop-ups including an interactive DSNY equipment exhibit at the Transit Museum’s annual Bus Festival, Treasures in the Trash collection displays at ReFashion Week and NYCxReuse conferences, and a ‘Treasures in the Trash’ art collaboration with Hi-Arts and the Hunter East Harlem Gallery.

With museum planning in initial stages, we are excited to explore the possibilities for exhibits and programming. Some initial ideas include:

  • Historic and miniature DSNY trucks and equipment

  • Historic photographs of DSNY operations and equipment

  • Photos and videos of clean-up operations following the 9/11 attacks

  • Digital representations of the works of Mierle Ukeles, DSNY’s Artist in Residence

  • A permanent home for the ‘Treasures in the Trash’ collection

  • Educational displays showing the life cycle of waste

  • Contemporary art works inspired by the concept of waste

  • Resource center for sustainable waste management innovation
