Join DSNY for a behind-the-scenes tour of our Staten Island Compost Facility and learn how we take your food scraps and yard waste from curbside collection to finished compost!
This is a family-friendly event; play games, win prizes, and meet our compost mascots--Scrappy and Leif!
The Staten Island Compost Facility is located on the former Fresh Kills Landfill, now called Freshkills Park. The Facility receives yard trimmings and food waste ("organics") from local landscapers, NYC residences and institutions. The yard trimmings are comprised of leaves, grass, brush, tree trunks and Christmas trees. The food waste, collected by the NYC Department of Sanitation, is from NYC Schools, residential homes participating in the "Organics Program," and food scraps from various Green Markets. Yard trimmings are mechanically reduced in size and then formed into rows called "windrows." The food waste is presorted and run through a "de-packaging" unit to remove contaminants and then is mixed into the shredded yard trimmings windrows. Once the windrows are completed, they are turned regularly for three to four months to speed up the decomposition process. This allows the windrows to heat to levels for proper decomposition while also meeting NYS regulations. Once the windrow temperatures drop, it is moved into a "curing" pile for at least 30 days, after which it is screened to remove any remaining plastic, becoming "finished compost." The compost is tested for quality assurance through the US Composting Council's Seal of Testing Assurance Program. The finished compost, known as "Big Apple Compost," is distributed in bags or bulk to City Agencies, non-profit organizations and "Giveback Events" to residents within New York City, or sold to private landscapers.
The site will be open from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM.
